The latest installment in Warren Hatch's excellent Video Microscope series is a sort of quicker-paced, overview version of the earlier 90-minute Protozoa Through a Microscope (VL-5/97). Presenting over 30 types of protozoa in segments lasting between 45 and 90 seconds, this informatively narrated program focuses on major identifying characteristics, and takes a very close-up look at the actions of the tiny creatures, including many more one-celled representatives from Kingdom Protista than just the famous amoeba and paramecium. About half the species segments on this video are new, and have improved production values (good overhead lighting, steadier camerawork), although I missed the usual listing of magnification strengths, which are useful for reproducing what's on the video in actual classroom microscope work. As always, this is an excellent resource at a reasonable price, especially for lower-income schools that do not enjoy access to state-of-the-art equipment. Highly recommended. Also newly available: Worm Bin Creatures Alive Through the Microscope and Crystal Growing: Views Through a Microscope. Aud: I, J, H, P. (E. Gieschen)
