Host Tom Lubin takes viewers on a magical mystery tour of the enigma of sound in this engaging how-to for the serious musician. Recorded in stereo hi-fi, the program begins with an in-depth overview of the history, operational theory, and types of microphones available to the dedicated audiophile. With the aid of computer graphics, viewers are shown the basics of different mike pickup patterns, phase relationships, and stereo miking. After a brief section on various accessories for the microphone, the program launches into the practical application section of the video: extensive advice on miking drums, acoustic and electric guitars, horns, strings, pianos, and vocals. How much the average home enthusiast will be able to do with these professional recording techniques is open to question. The other two tapes in the series, Shaping Your Sound with Equalizers, Compressors, and Gates and Shaping Your Sound with Revert and Delay are even further away from the general public. Libraries with extensive print holdings on professional sound recording will want to consider these well-made productions. Recommended. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
