This video fills a niche for winter sports enthusiasts by showing them the basic steps needed to construct a snow cave and how such a shelter may be used for enjoyment as well as for protection. Guide and mountaineer Bill Blumberg looks downright cold as he presents his information on location at Mt. Rainier and Mt. Hood in Washington state. Along with a crew of mountain rescue experts, Blumberg shows how to judge the snow and make sure it's the right kind for making caves, how to arch the ceiling for added strength, how to make vent holes, and many other topics. And since the average skier probably wont be carrying around much of the equipment shown in the demonstrations (shovel, candles, sleeping bag, etc.), Blumberg describes ways of making snow cave shelters with only basic materials.
