The popularity of PBS's Antiques Roadshow has apparently spilled over into the comparatively upper crust Sotheby's crowd, and in an effort to capitalize on the democratization of antiques, this video set has been freshened up for wider consumption on DVD. Divided into three programs--an introduction to fine European antiques, followed by more detailed looks at specific English styles (1770-1880) and French styles (Louis XIV-Napoleon III), the disc also features a history of Sotheby's, with a listing of their locations around the world ("Let Us Auction Your Priceless Antiques!"), and estimated prices of selected items spotlighted in the programs. Taped in Australia, with an emphasis on European antiques, this is not necessarily something the Roadshow crowd will enjoy (there's no mention of rare baseball cards, 19th century gambling devices, or advice on how to spot a genuine Tiffany lamp). Still, libraries serving high-income areas will want to pick up this high name recognition title. Recommended. [Note: this is also still available on VHS in a 3-video set for $29.98.] Aud: P. (R.
