National Aerobic Champion Barry Joyce is the host and instructor for Street Jam, a colorful, musical, and definitely physical aerobic workout that places as much emphasis on dancing as it does on exercising. Joyce and six others begin on a fairly simple level, but quickly pick up the pace, until only the most dedicated street jammers are going to be able to keep up-especially for 55 uninterrupted minutes. A neon set, a pulsating original rap soundtrack, and a wide variety of complex moves, will appeal to a young physically fit audience. And, if most exercise tapes fall into the category of being too simple and too boring, Street Jam offers more challenge than any other exercise video I've seen. Too, there's the additional benefit of learning some pretty hot dance moves. Total Teen Fitness is an exercise program for pre-teens and teens which features non-stop special effects that actually work quite well. Created by clinical psychologist Dr. Gregory Archer (who appears on the video as "Dr. A"), the program offers original rap tunes performed by the Dr., and a group of teens who exercise amidst some of the most colorful backgrounds seen on home video. The tape is divided into four sections: warm-up, aerobics, exercises for strength, and cool-down. While the kids demonstrate the exercises, Dr. A sings encouragement: "Being out of shape is out of date." In addition to the health-oriented lyrics, on-screen graphic tags warn kids to say no to smoking, alcohol, pills, sugary snacks, etc. An excellent program for pre-teens and early teens. Street Jam is recommended. Total Teen Fitness is highly recommended, and an Editor's Choice. (Street Jam is available from: Tapeworm Video, 12229 Montague St., Arleta, CA 91331.)
