Miriam E. Nelson, Ph.D., author of the hugely popular “strong women” series of books (Strong Women Stay Slim, Strong Women Eat Well, etc.), is the host for this motivational seminar geared towards women over the age of 35. Offering advice on minimizing the effects of aging and optimizing health, Nelson reminds the small studio audience that “inactivity is the major cause of aging” (a remark which immediately brought me out of my chair and had me jogging in place while I took shaky notes for the rest of the program). Singing the praises of strength training, Nelson demonstrates a series of exercises with dumbbells and leg weights here designed to increase muscle mass (which, along with physical activity will raise metabolism, resulting in long term weight control, and a senior body to die for--well, maybe "to die for" isn't the best analogy here). In addition, Nelson shares inspirational “case” stories; discusses nutrition, medical conditions such as osteoporosis and arthritis, and emotional changes associated with aging; and offers strategies for growing older with grace and vitality (and if you don't stay in shape, how on earth are you going to run with the wolves?). Highly recommended. Aud: P. (N. Plympton)
