There are a lot of 'survival videos' on the market and if your library is located in a part of the country where outdoor adventures could easily turn into nightmares, chances are you've got more than one title on your shelves. Make room for another. Survival Basics is one of the best of its genre for novices and pros alike, and everyone from Boy Scouts to Iditerod racers will benefit from the tips offered here by Dr. Ron Hood, whose easy-going manner and self-deprecating humor helps to move the video along at an enjoyable clip. Viewers will learn how to build a shelter, start a fire without matches, put together a portable survival kit and much more in the first part of this 2-part series. The second volume (also $19.95) looks at star navigation, trapping food, and using a wrist watch as a compass, among other topics. Strongly recommended for libraries in wilderness areas. (J. Carlson)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
