Throughout the history of warfare, one weapon has remained the symbol of both conflict and peace: the sword. As viewers will learn in this unique video, presented by master swordsmith Richard Kazda, little has actually changed in the making of a quality sword: some steps have been modernized, but much of the detail work is still done by hand using tools and techniques created centuries ago. Combining close-up live shots and animated segments, the program follows the making of a replica Nordic-type sword from selecting the material to final assembly, including forging the individual elements, surface finishing, strength tests, fashioning the grip, decorating the guard and pommel, creating a scabbard, and performing cutting tests. Sure to appeal to collectors, fencers, members of historical re-enactment associations, and gangbangers, The Birth of a Sword is recommended. Aud: C, P. (J. Carlson)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
