What country did we fight during the Revolutionary War? What are the three branches of government? Have you ever been a member of the Communist party? Will you bear arms for your country if asked? Hmmm... I wonder just how many native-born Americans would be able to answer these questions to the satisfaction of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). After a random pop-quiz among my friends, I have my doubts. The INS Citizenship Interview dissects the interview process, revealing the criteria necessary to pass, which include an ability to speak, read and write English, a working knowledge of American history and the U.S. Constitution, and possession of a good moral character (viewers will also learn the red flags that can trigger a rejection). The video is divided into three parts: "The Interview" offers a dramatized interview with a man from Mexico; "A Closer Look" applies the acceptance criteria to various interview scenarios, and "Your Turn" gives viewers a chance to evaluate whether the people in the taped scenarios would pass. Weighing the video's main disadvantage of being five years old against the fact that there is scant similar material available on tape, this is recommended, overall. Aud: H, C, P. (J. Asala)
