Conceived by Daniel G. Amen, M.D., this is an encyclopedic guide for parents to use while talking to their children about sex, male and female anatomy, teenage pregnancy and contraception, peer pressure, drugs, AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, and "scary situations" (being followed, inappropriately touched, etc.). The program uses a simple format: a father and son are shown discussing the issues in various natural contexts (fishing, washing the car, hiking, playing horseshoes, etc.). In between segments, the program shifts to brief interviews with experts in the respective fields under discussion. In an introduction, Dr. Amen encourages parents to watch the tape first, by themselves, and then to watch and talk about with their 8-16 year old children those segments which they feel comfortable about sharing. For the most part, this video works very well, since the actors playing father and son are completely relaxed in their roles (it's not easy to eat watermelon and talk about wet dreams convincingly at the same time). Too, the program very nicely walks the often delicate line between offering guidance and encouraging independence. Throughout, the father keeps reminding the son that it's important for him to have the most reliable information available so that he (the son) will be able to make responsible decisions. This program pulls no punches; it is a frank examination of the issues without protective gloss. It won't (or shouldn't) scare children-but it does tell them like it really is. Highly recommended.
