Whatsa Hygiene?

How do you irritate the 8 to 11 set? You treat them like babies. You tell them stuff they already know, and they, in turn, roll their eyes and tune you out. Children in grades 4-6--the target audience here--don't think they need to be shown how to bathe and wash their hair and brush their teeth; skills which are usually adequately covered in the primary grades. So how do you think they will react to a graphic for hand-washing which diagrams soap, hands, and water? Most preteens are beginning to cope with the radical changes of adolescence, but while some attention is paid to the problems of pimples, body odor, and the need for kids to be in charge of their own cleanliness, the general focus seems to be skewed towards primary level skills. The premise of young teens getting together in a rock band to perform about personal hygiene--the method used for presenting the information--defies description. Whatsa Hygiene? will definitely cause some snorts of derision from the back of the classroom. Very optional. Aud: I. (E. Druda)
