Love Goddess to Warrior Woman: my, but we have come a long way. Check out this video's--admittedly questionable--statistics: 46% of all women will face an assault sometime in their lives, rape is one of the fastest growing crimes in America (according to the 1999 edition of The World Almanac, rape has actually declined from its peak in 1992 by 12.2% in 1996--the latest figures available from the FBI), or that rape is more common than alcoholism or left-handedness (a weird analogy, since 1 in 7 children are left-handed, while the odds of becoming an alcoholic, in men, is 1 in 62,000; in women, considerably higher). Even with the fudge factor of a few off numbers, viewers may well decide that the cliché "weaker sex" needs a new and improved slogan, such as "warrior woman," a state of being which might include physical, mental and spiritual preparedness as women are encouraged to build confidence and develop self-esteem. In this quasi-self-defense training program, instructor Melanie Murphy exhorts true warriors to develop zanchen or complete awareness of mind, body and spirit. Her fitness program is based on "developing total power from the inside out." Viewers receive a full body conditioning regiment, with upper body workout and muscle toning exercises, but Murphy (a 4th degree black belt) sees physical strength as of secondary value to the "weapon of knowledge," which incorporates karate, Eastern philosophy and a centering of self respect and confidence. Sure to be popular, this is recommended for most collections. Aud: P. (N. Plympton)
