Despite studies showing there is a little bit of DNA from black Africans in nearly all Mexicans, more obvious Afro-Mexicans with distinctly brown or black skin, curly hair, and other physical features are considered lower-class citizens, according to this revealing documentary. There was a time, just as in the U.S. when Africans were kidnapped and brought to Mexico as slaves. With the end of slavery there, Mexico also drew refugees from slavery elsewhere. In time, the descendants of these newly freed people successfully assimilated into Mexico's population. But according to the young Afro-Americans we hear from in Jamaica & Tamarindo, there is pressure on them to "look white" as much as possible, through choices in clothing, hair-styling, and anything that camouflages actual ethnicity. But there is also growing pride among many Afro-Mexicans, as we see in vibrant, exciting community dances, costumes, and rituals that specifically evoke West African heritage. The film captures both the determination and good humor of young adults ready to let their black identities become more visible, no matter who disapproves. The film's title, by the way, refers to a blend of spices---one Mexican, the other originally West African, that blend nicely together in exotic drinks. It's a perfect symbol for the future of racial harmony in Mexico. Strongly recommended. Aud: I, J, H, C, P (T. Keogh)
