Originally made for KOMO TV in Seattle, by the station's local news team, this "how-to" on stress management for women is long on personal narrative, but a little short on actual advice. Ostensibly about successfully juggling the roles of wife, mother, and businesswoman, Life's Balancing Act cuts between individual women's stories and comments by stress experts. Some segments, such as a piece on taking care of aging parents, or one on leaving the corporate rat race for peaceful life in the country are pretty good, but others--such as an extensive segment on an infertile couple trying to have a child--seem to be quite wide of the mark, subject-wise. Although there is--after numerous commercial "blackouts"--some straightforward instruction at the close of the tape on the importance of exercise, laughter, deep breathing, etc. in coping with stress, the program overall is more a compilation of news profile pieces than helpful guidance for today's stressed woman. Stressed Out (VL-9/93), though not gender-specific, is a better choice. (R. Pitman)
