With their Irish-influenced Top 40-friendly sound and runway model looks, The Corrs (Andrea Corr on lead vocals and tin whistle, with sisters Caroline on drums and Sharon on violin, backed by brother Jimmy on guitar and keyboards), should be number one with a bullet on the pop charts, no? Well, no. Despite their beauty and considerable musical talent, The Corrs seem to record four blander-than-most tracks for every hit they produce, making for a very uneven listening experience. The Corrs: Live in London, a 2000 concert filmed in London's famed Wembley Arena, presents the band's strengths and weaknesses writ large in Dolby Digital 5.0 surround sound as they plow through a generous (numerically, if not musically) 23-song set over the course of nearly two hours, with highlights including spirited renditions of their best-known songs ("What Can I Do?," "Somebody for Someone," "Radio," "Breathless," and "So Young") and lowlights including a pointless and unflattering cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" (if you don't have distinctive pipes like Stevie Nicks, why bother?). Still, on the Irish jam instrumentals "Joy of Life," "Paddy McCarthy," and "Toss the Feathers," The Corrs ably demonstrate that they can rock the house, big time, and the 20-minute behind-the-scenes featurette will appeal to fans, making this otherwise sporadically engaging concert a strong optional purchase.
