Strict enforcement of immigration laws have resulted in families being separated, but in the case of gay couples one finds the added burden of patchwork legal issues facing same-sex unions. In most states, gay and lesbian couples have no legal argument to make if a partner is being forced to leave the country. In many cases, the American member of the pair is forced to emigrate if the relationship is to remain intact. When the couple has adopted children, however, the situation becomes even thornier. Sebastian Cordoba's intelligent documentary follows 10 couples facing immigration-separation situations. In one instance, a man needs to readjust his schedule so that he can communicate in real time by webcam with his partner, who was forced to return to Europe; other couples remain together for the moment but their pending cases cause uncommon stress. Attempts to address the problem through federal legislation remain stalled in Congress, with no groundswell of support among elected officials (let alone the general population). Through Thick and Thin looks at the myriad legal concerns and emotional issues tied to this subject, while also capturing the anguish and frustration felt by those interviewed here. Tackling a subject that touches on numerous academic disciplines—including LGBT studies, sociology, psychology, political science, and law—this powerful and thought-provoking documentary will also appeal to many general viewers. Highly recommended. Aud: C, P. (P. Hall)
