Starring Jim Belushi as an oafish lout (not much of a stretch), According to Jim debuted in the fall of 2001 and became an improbable hit. Set in a middle-class suburban neighborhood, the series finds Belushi playing successful construction contractor Jim, whose often boorish behavior obscures his undying love for his beautiful wife Cheryl (Courtney Thorne-Smith) and precocious kids Ruby (Taylor Atelian), Gracie (Billi Bruno), and Kyle (Conner Rayburn). Although Cheryl frequently bristles at Jim's apparent selfishness and immature antics, she also has a playful side. In one of the better episodes, “Blow Up,” she poses for a revealing photo which she gives to Jim as a Valentine's Day present, only to be humiliated when he proudly displays it to anyone who will look. And in “High Pressure,” she definitely proves her love for the big lug, showering him with attention after he's diagnosed with high blood pressure—not realizing that her attempts at stress relief are agitating him even more. Jim's screw-ups occur with almost weekly frequency in this 22-episode debut season set, but he really blows it in “Anniversary” when Cheryl discovers he's been paying her high-strung sister Dana (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) to buy anniversary gifts for the last 10 years. Speaking of Dana, the beautiful and talented Williams-Paisley is wasted in a thankless supporting role, while Larry Joe Campbell, playing Jim's partner Andy, is just a waste, period. Still, According to Jim is in its eighth (and rumored to be final) season, which means that Belushi and company must have been doing something right. DVD extras include audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes featurettes, a set tour, and a gag reel. Optional. (E. Hulse)
