Even at 345 minutes, this compilation offers merely a sampler of the 100-plus episodes of Celebrity Bowling produced between 1971 and 1978 by KTTV Channel 5 in Los Angeles. Utilizing two regulation lanes built within the studio, the half-hour programs (more like 20 minutes sans commercials) feature popular television and movie stars from the era, as well as the occasional sports giant. Hosted by Jed Allan, the format has teams of paired celebs competing for prizes (which are awarded to viewers). It's a kick to watch Ed Asner and Gavin MacLeod face off; see William Shatner prove less accurate with a bowling ball than with a Star Trek phaser; and watch then real-life couple Brenda Vaccaro and Michael Douglas as a duo. The best bowlers to appear repeatedly: Roy Rogers, Bob Newhart, George Foreman. Biggest cut-ups: Morey Amsterdam, Charles Nelson Reilly, and Hogan's Heroes' Robert Clary. Nicest team: Donald O'Connor and Rosemary Clooney. One can also spot celebrities in the sparse studio audience, including Ernest Borgnine, Robert Culp, and Joan Collins (cackling behind her then-husband, Anthony Newley, who plays without any semblance of seriousness). More of a curio—albeit an entertaining one—than anything else, this is a strong optional purchase. (T. Keogh)
