At a time when Martha Stewart and “Kenny-Boy” Lay are making headlines for their rather poor grasp of the concept of ethics, it's no wonder that teens are often confused as to what exactly constitutes cheating. Is it cheating to copy a friend's class notes? In this program from the popular PBS series In the Mix, a variety of high school students offer their definitions of cheating, explain why they cheat even though they know it's wrong, and brainstorm ways to address the issue. It's interesting that in addition to the obvious reasons for cheating--laziness, pressure for good grades, etc.--the subject of teacher apathy comes up several times (hey, let's blame the teacher!). Just how much can you cut and paste from the Internet before it's plagiarism? Not surprisingly, there's some confusion about what exactly constitutes plagiarism--the second major topic here--and the program visits a freshman ethics class wrestling with their school's policies (frankly, the frosh make questionable authority figures on the subject). While relevant and timely, Ethics: Cheating and Plagiarism suffers from shoddy camerawork and sound, as well as loose editing: essentially this is just a bunch of students talking without coming to any real objective conclusions.
