Gomorrah’s back with more heart-pounding action and shocking betrayal. The third season begins exactly where season two left off, just outside the Savastano crypt in Naples. From there we are shown the activities of Genny Savastano (Salvatore Esposito), Ciro Di Marzio (Marco D’amore), and several others during the following year. Genny attempts to cheat both the Camorra’s inner circle and Roman crime lord Giuseppe Avitabile (Gianfranco Gallo) by using his new connections and Avitabile’s prison stay to siphon money, property, and trafficking cocaine out from under his new father-in-law’s nose. Don Giuseppe has a hunch and threatens Genny’s accountant and real estate broker Gegè (Edoardo Sorgente).
Avitabile banishes Genny to his home in Naples, promising to kill him if he ever shows his face in Rome or tries to see his wife Azzurra (Ivana Lotito). Ciro finds himself between a rock and a hard place: As the face of the gang coup in Secondigliano he can’t safely return to Naples, nor can he continue to stomach his job as a human trafficker. These events unfold until Ciro and Genny unite in Naples, cementing their power in an alliance with Enzo ‘Sangre Blu’ (Arturo Muselli), grandson of the disgraced founder of the Camorra Syndicate.
This season doesn’t lack in conspiracy, action, or cinematography. While missing the outstanding, massive gunfights of the first season, gunplay remains key to many plots. Avitabile’s turnabout is an excellent early twist and cements the idea that Genny still has a lot to learn. Themes of trust and family-run throughout this season. The viewer gets a front-row seat to the beginning of the end of the Camorra: Their leaders fight among themselves, and their revenue is under siege by authorities domestic and international. The syndicate’s soft treatment of Sangre Blu makes clear the waning power of the once-powerful crime family. The third season of Gomorrah is highly recommended and belongs in any crime drama collection. It also makes an outstanding addition to foreign language collections.
