An expanded version of a superb PBS-aired American Masters documentary about seminal American country music legend Hank Williams, Honky Tonk Blues combines rare archival footage and rich interviews with George Jones, Hank Williams Jr., and members of Williams' backup band (the Drifting Cowboys), among others, to limn a seamless profile of the archetypal musician, chronicling his childhood loneliness, mentorship in the blues by Rufus "Tee-Tot" Payne, and unexpected emergence as a prolific singer-songwriter "who taught people it's okay to bare your soul in everyday language." In addition to his musical gifts, the program explores Williams' demons via commentary about his turbulent career and marriages, as well as his haunting death at the age of 29. DVD extras include 30 minutes of bonus material. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: H, C, P. (T. Keogh)
