This popular Disney Channel/ABC series starring pop star Miley Cyrus ends as it began—hammy and hokey. The fourth and final season finds high school senior Miley Stewart—who manages to conceal her real identity from all but family members and close friends when appearing as teen singer Hannah Montana—making the transition out of Hannah-hood, with the big reveal taking place on, of all places, Jay Leno's Tonight Show. In the concluding segment, Miley must choose between going to college with her lifelong best friend Lilly (Emily Osment, a naturally gifted comedienne who deserves her own series) or starring in a Tom Cruise movie directed by Steven Spielberg. To its credit, the show's heart is in the right place. Real-life and TV-character dad Billy Ray Cyrus, although saddled with cringe-worthy jokes, is one of television's rare father figures who usually knows best when it comes to life lessons, and Vicki Lawrence, as Miley's grandma, is always welcome. Presenting all 13 episodes from the 2010–11 last season, DVD extras include a cast reunion, alternate ending, and accompanying booklet. A strong optional purchase. (D. Liebenson)
