Classic rhinestones can fetch hundreds of dollars, so treat grandmother's U.S. flag pin, with its red, white and blue crystals, a little more respectfully! As in Hidden Treasures: Signed Costume Jewelry (VL-11/98), host Marcia Brown here relates the history of rhinestones--an American term for what Europeans call "paste," she explains. However, while the other tapes focused on individual jewelry manufacturers, here Brown discusses the basics of rhinestone jewelry: the homely "pot metals" (mostly tin) that are the base for the various plated finishes, the shape of the crystals, and selecting and caring for old pieces. This is a wonderful, concise introduction (with a price guide at the close) to a popular subject for collectors. Public libraries are well-advised to order. If funds do not permit the purchase of both this and the previously reviewed title, consider this volume the top priority. Aud: P. (R. Reagan)
