This fourth season of the BBC crime series gets a healthy dose of star power thanks to the presence of Thandie Newton as DCI Roseanne Huntley, who can charitably be described as neither Britain's most pleasant nor most honest law enforcement officer. Huntley's investigation of a suspected serial murderer hinges on questionable evidence, but her refusal to acknowledge the possibility of errors in the case quickly spiral into unexpected circumstances. The AC-12 anti-corruption team is called in to take a closer look at Huntley's operations, an inquiry that becomes caught up in a web of legal entanglements and emotional complexities. Fans of this series, which is broadcast stateside on Acorn TV, enjoy the regular characters, including AC-12 Superintendent Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston), and DS Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure). But the spark this season is Newton, who brings a subtle yet deadly personality to her role, turning what could have been a standard-issue dirty cop part into a fascinating portrait of barely concealed malignancy. Compiling all six episodes from 2017, this is highly recommended. (P. Hall)
