In this Discovery Channel series, former Special Forces soldier and survival expert Mykel Hawke and his wife, veteran field journalist Ruth England, test their abilities in rugged and remote locations including Botswana, Tasmania, the Amazon rainforest, the gator-infested Louisiana bayous, and the Mexican desert. After placing themselves in life-threatening situations, the couple must quickly scout their surroundings, build shelter and a fire, and obtain food and water while waiting for help to arrive. The premise here is that the two must rely on each other to make it through the self-imposed crisis with body and mind intact. While Mykel concedes that “survival ain't rocket science,” it's also true that there are a thousand ways to be killed in the wilderness, including animal predators, snakebites, poisoned water, hypothermia, dehydration, or infection. Faint-of-heart viewers should be warned that the program contains numerous scenes of killing and skinning animals, plus a gut-wrenching sequence involving the consumption of human waste. In the end, the couple is drawn closer together while finding a path to survival in all but one location (“Alaska whupped us,” Mykel says). Compiling all 10 episodes from the 2010 debut season in a two-disc set, this offbeat production certainly isn't for everyone, but is recommended for those with a penchant for adventure. Aud: P. (S.
