An updated version of the popular 1980s TV series Fist of the North Star, this new offshoot initially feels like an anime rip-off of the Mad Max series, before finally settling into an entertaining viewing experience. Somewhere in the ruins of the post-apocalyptic landscape of Last Land, the heroic martial arts expert Kenshiro (who practices a rare, ancient fighting style that results in his opponents exploding from within) travels with a motley collection of sidekicks, including the spiritual healer Sara and an amnesiac mute boy named Bista. In the opening volume, The Cursed City, Kenshiro and his gang help a lethally sick child known as Lord Doha obtain a life-saving serum. Kenshiro leaves for the distant Cliffland to obtain the medicine, fighting off a swarm of demons who try to halt his mission. Meanwhile, back home, Sara finds herself being pursued by a new man, the nefarious fighter Seiji. Will Kenshiro return in time to save her? If New Fist of the North Star isn't the most original of anime productions in regard to character development and plot twists, it compensates with a fast-paced story and stylish artwork. The action sequences, especially the motorcycle chases, are invigorating and imaginative, and the menacing Seiji is the perfect anime villain. Rated 17-up, this dual-language disc also features bonus interviews. Recommended. [Note: New Fist of the North Star, Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 are also available.] Aud: P. (P. Hall)
