This horrendous ‘50s-inspired throwback from the early ‘70s is being marketed as some kind of hip retro cool release, but it's really just an artifact better left dead and buried. One of the Riverdale teens from the Archie comics, Sabrina is a witch capable of performing magic, but she keeps her abilities secret from everyone, including her drippy boyfriend, Harvey—modern feminists may interpret this as follows: powerful chick Sabrina might threaten Harvey's dubious male superiority, and therefore keeps her mouth shut. Hence the supposed comedy: “Hey, how did that mysterious and somewhat magical thing just happen?” is the unspoken refrain of every idiot with whom Sabrina shares the screen. Compiling all 31 episodes from the 1971 animated series, DVD extras on this handsomely preserved three-disc set include the never-before-seen first episode of The Archie and Sabrina Surprise Package (a late-‘70s syndicated series), and an art gallery. Not a necessary purchase. (M. Johanson)
