While History Channel's Swamp People is often a grim and grisly viewing experience—stalking alligators isn't exactly pretty—the series also offers a fascinating peek into a way of life in America's bayou region. Set during the month-long hunting season in the enormous wetlands of Louisiana, this reality series follows the ups and downs of several teams of “swampers” as they attempt to reach their quota of animals—necessary, the show claims, to keep the gator population in check. The timeframe adds pressure to these men, who work 18-hour days and sometimes supplement their income with late-night shrimping, snake hunting, and even catching bullfrogs to feed the kids at home. Most are Cajuns—descendants of French refugees forced out of Canada in the 18th century—primarily hunting as father-son teams (leading to predictable relationship conflicts). The real action, however, is in the water, where gators up to 13 feet long put up a dangerous fight, fueling fears that someone will be dragged from a boat. Along the way, the show weaves in plenty of added challenges—ranging from poachers to mechanical foul-ups—all leading up to a final chapter in which we see who had a good year and who didn't. Presenting all 10 episodes from the 2010 first season, DVD extras include additional footage. Recommended. (T. Keogh)
