On the cult-TV, I-want-it-now DVD wish list, The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. is close to the top for many a fan—myself included—so just to hold this glorious set in my trembling hands is akin to possessing the Holy Grail itself. An early entry from the Fox network, this criminally short-lived 1993–94 series—a wildly entertaining mélange of Western, comedy, and science fiction—astonished viewers with its “just under over-the-top” blend of knowing winks and clever anachronisms, served up by geek-god star Bruce Campbell. If Cary Grant met Harrison Ford on the set of a John Wayne movie directed by Roger Corman, they might spontaneously combust into Campbell's titular bounty hunter, a Harvard Law grad gone West in the 1890s to avenge the murder of his legendary-lawman father at the hands of a notorious outlaw gang. In these 27 still-fresh episodes, Brisco cavorts with brainy lawyers, sexy dancehall singers, and mad scientists, while also chasing down mysterious alien objects, pulling a con on a card sharp, being framed for murder, and much more—on the eve of a brand new century. DVD extras include all-new interviews with Campbell and creator Carlton Cuse (Lost), audio commentary on the pilot episode, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and a booklet written by Campbell. Highly recommended. (M. Johanson)
