George Lucas' The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Volume Two—The War Years continues with eight feature-length globe-trotting episodes from the Emmy-winning 1990s TV series, this time focusing on the chapters of Jones' life as a young man in the trenches of World War I, on the eve of the Bolshevik revolution in Russia, between the satin sheets of sexy spy Mata Hari, and in a German prison with the young Charles de Gaulle. As with the first season, each of the “episodes” are re-edited together from the original hour-long broadcasts to more resemble a theatrical movie, shedding light on major events, figures, and ideas from a pivotal era in world history. Here, we find Jones (Sean Patrick Flanery) in action during WWI, serving in the infantry of the Belgian army under an assumed name, rising in rank from corporal to captain and eventually becoming a spy. The series takes us into the horror of the Great War's most infamous battles, including the action at Verdun, the Somme, in the Middle East, and elsewhere. After Jones becomes a secret agent, we follow him on missions to Austria to help forge a separate peace between the last Hapsburg emperor and the Allies, and see him working with T.E. Lawrence on an ambitious plan to save British and Australian troops crossing a merciless desert. Like the first volume, the amazing DVD extras here—which have genuine curriculum value as well as being entertaining—include 26 in-depth companion documentaries on the various historical figures and events featured in the series, with insights from scholars, historians, and luminaries. A bonus DVD-ROM disc features an interactive historical timeline. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. [Note: The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Volume Three is also newly available.] (T. Keogh)
