When did Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan eclipse Amanda Bynes? Watching her in these two episodes compiled from the debut season of her eponymous 1999-2002 Nickelodeon sketch comedy series, Bynes would have gotten my vote for Most Likely to Succeed. Unlike her 'tween queen counterparts, Amanda's forte is comedy: she mugs with the abandon of Jerry Lewis, takes a good fall, and commits herself to her gallery of characters. Happily, she was well-served by The Amanda Show writers, with notable segments here including a promo for the faux show Moody's Point that offers a welcome skewering of the teen angst on Dawson's Creek, and a great bit about foreign family video store owners who try to pawn off homemade rip-offs--such as Snowy Day for Snow Day--on their outraged customers. Filling a void for laugh-starved 'tweens, this is recommended. [Note: The Amanda Show: The Girls' Room, Volume 2 is also newly available.] Aud: P. (D. Liebenson)
