This eight-episode 1972-73 BBC miniseries, which originally aired on PBS' Masterpiece Theatre, serves up lavish costume drama profiles of some of the more colorful characters of British politics, commerce, and culture during the opening years of the 20th century. In these stories, viewers will witness the genesis of the automotive partnership between Charles Rolls (Robert Powell) and Henry Royce (Michael Jayston), the activities of financial fraudster Horatio Bottomly (Timothy West), the unusual love life of novelist E. Nesbit (Judy Parfitt), the curious adventures of Arthur Conan Doyle (Nigel Davenport), the work of soldier-turned-Scout Movement founder Robert Baden-Powell (Ron Moody), the unlikely labor activities of music hall star Marie Lloyd (Georgia Brown), the adulterous relationship between Edward VII (Thorley Walters) and the Countess of Warwick (Virginia McKenna), and the political ascension of David Lloyd George (Anthony Hopkins). Boasting a fine cast and rich production values, The Edwardians offers an intelligent historical treatment of Edwardian life. Highly recommended. (P. Hall)
