Featuring the insane antics of C-list actor Jamie Kennedy, this three-disc set compiles the 17-episode debut 2002 season of his reality prank series The Jamie Kennedy Experiment (a.k.a. JKX). Although Kennedy is somewhat rough around the edges as a host (his drab outfits and corny simpering are grating), his act comes alive when he shifts from inane audience banter and intros to hilarious hidden camera hoax footage. Through costumes, makeup, false identities, and obliging JKX players, Kennedy pulls practical jokes by feeding off the credulity of innocent folks (many of whom are thrust into the situation by someone who wants to “get” them). Notable sketches here include “UNLV Proposal” (Jamie's marriage proposal is declined--in front of thousands of giggling hecklers from a University of Las Vegas basketball game), “Driving Instructor” (a driving student riding with bogus instructor Jamie must endure risky maneuvers and side trips to an angry ex-wife), and “L.A. Tours” (as a star homes tour director, Jamie “breaks” into Bob Saget's mansion and gives a group a bizarre peek: Saget's fridge contains only bologna and vodka). Other skits--with oft-recycled setups and characters--include “Judge Jamie,” Oprah-iffic talk-show host “Virginia Hamm,” “The Massage Hole,” “Jaw Surgery,” “Pizza Delivery,” and “Brad Gluckman” (the basis for Kennedy's Malibu's Most Wanted wannabe gangsta character). Featuring guest appearances by Ahmet Zappa, George Wendt, James Belushi, and Olympic Gold Medalist Apolo Anton Ohno, this lowbrow first season set is a highly recommended hoot! (J. Williams)
