The back-cover blurb for this Canadian TV miniseries proudly—and rather brashly—proclaims "It's The Sopranos on chrome-plated choppers," but whether or not that's a good thing depends on one's sensibilities. The Last Chapter does bear a passing resemblance to the venerated series, albeit with fewer f-words and Canadian biker lords in place of New Jersey mafia dons. The two-season (2002-2003) 12-episode series collected here tells the tale of the Triple Sixers, Canada's biggest, baddest biker gang, led by Bob Durelle (perennial heavy Michael Ironside), who has a bold scheme to seize control of the nation's drug trade. Overall, this is a solid but not great crime drama, hampered by a couple of histrionic performances and some slack storytelling (a subplot involving a dogged police detective is never fully developed). What the series does have going for it is plenty of Shakespearean-scale power struggles, betrayals, madness, bloodshed, and Ironside's classic brand of foaming-at-the mouth evil run amok. DVD extras include a “making-of” featurette, deleted scenes, and behind-the-scenes footage. A strong optional purchase. (G. Dowell)
