Considered one of the best new TV series of 2010, The Walking Dead is an unlikely critical favorite: an epic zombie drama following a group of people trying to survive predators (both alive and undead) after the apocalypse—while also seeking community and meaning after the end of the world as we know it. Developed by Frank Darabont from the acclaimed comic book/graphic novel series by Robert Kirkman, this intelligent, character-rich series stars Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, a Southern sheriff's deputy who—after being wounded in a shootout and falling into a coma—awakens to a devastated planet. Rick sets out on a desperate quest to find his missing wife Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) and son Carl (Chandler Riggs), running into assorted survivors along the way. Aired on AMC, The Walking Dead manages to push the boundaries of violence and gore without slipping into exploitation, but human psychology remains the focus, as the various characters work through personal relationships and existential crises. Presenting all six episodes of the abbreviated 2010 debut season on DVD and Blu-ray, extras include a “making-of” featurette, a “Conversation Panel with Producers” from Comic-Con, “Zombie Tips for Halloween” with the show's makeup wizard Greg Nicotero, and several behind-the-scenes featurettes. Highly recommended. (S. Axmaker)
