One of the most visible symbols of American democracy, the White House is at once an historic site, a residence, a workplace, and a stage upon which American history unfolds. Produced by the White House Historical Association, the outstanding Where History Lives: A Tour of the White House takes the viewer on a whirlwind behind-the-scenes tour of the premises at America's most recognizable address, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Appropriately introduced by First Lady Laura Bush in the White House library, the program provides an entertaining blend of facts, anecdotes, and sumptuous photography: viewers will learn that George Washington planned but never occupied the White House, Dolly Madison (defying British troops) personally rescued Gilbert Stuart's portrait of Washington when the White House was torched during the War of 1812, "Honest Abe" never slept in the Lincoln bedroom but rather used it as an office, and Harry Truman ordered an ambitious renovation project when one of the legs of his piano crashed through a White House floor. The video illustrates notable additions and improvements over the years, including all of the major public rooms and halls, describing how these spaces function in White House daily life and statecraft, while close-up views offer unique perspectives on furniture, art, and china. Boasting inspired, upbeat music (provided by the "President's Own," the United States Marine Corps Band), this PBS-aired program would make an outstanding addition to any public, school, or academic library. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: J, H, C, P. (S. Rees)
