The third and final season of this CBS series—based on a 2012 novel by James Patterson and Michel Ledwidge—jumps ahead a decade to 2027, expanding what started as a rampaging-animal extravaganza into a larger struggle over the future of increasingly sterile humanity. An even greater danger comes from so-called hybrids, synthetically manufactured creatures that threaten all of humankind. The CGI effects, while not on the level of the best Hollywood has to offer, continue to be the most impressive element of the series, while the convoluted plotlines involving the surviving main characters are more ridiculous than compelling, involving repeated deaths and resurrections and the discovery of long lost children, not to mention disagreement among the heroes and heroines, and the introduction of a villainess named Abigail (Athena Karkanis), who is the head of the sinister group behind the creation of the hybrids. The absurdity that has marked Zoo from the very beginning is ratcheted up exponentially here, and while the series admittedly possesses a certain camp value, it is not surprising that the network decided to cancel (even though the finale certainly sets the stage for more of the same). Compiling all 13 episodes from the 2017 third and final season, extras include deleted scenes, an SFX reel, and a gag reel. (F. Swietek)
