Some amazing wildlife footage--reminiscent of Disney's current video hit The Fox and the Hound--of a young fox playing with a baby cougar is the highlight of this otherwise pedestrian low-budget nature video. One of several titles in "The Old Man in the Woods" series, the framing device is very weak: a narrator tells us that an "old man" watches over the animals of the forest, and at occasional intervals we do indeed see an edited-in shot of an elderly gentleman laughing, but there's no real connection with the "story." There are, however, some wonderful shots (though not always well lit) of a cougar frolicking with a fox and a sketchily narrated story about their eventual parting. Though aimed at "school age children," the graphic footage of the cougar killing a snake, crow, and rabbit would be too intense for younger kids, and the choppy editing and low-budget production values just don't measure up to the many professional nature videos already on the market. Not recommended. (R. Pitman)
