Children's morals and inspirational lessons have customarily been imparted via stories, fables, fairy tales, dramatizations, and cartoons. In this tape, acrobatic golf comedian Joey "O" chooses an alternate, more straightforward approach in his "conduct of life" musings. Instead of a traditional, fictionalized storyline, viewers are greeted by a rather uncomfortable host who blasts, "Hello there! Have you ever had a dream for your future? Did you plant the seed for your dream in your mind?" After that bombastic beginning, Joey explains how he came to be a successful acrobatic golf comedian, despite nay-sayers, failures, and the occasional physical injury. Interspersed throughout the interview are scenes of Joey's admittedly unique act, and many generic captions such as "Nothing worthwhile comes easily. Be the best you can be!" and "Every idea comes from a thought! If you can imagine it happening, you can do it. Plant your dream seed!" The unsubtle, exclamation-point-laden style of this tape aside, I've always had a problem with the "you can be anything you want to be" style of self-esteem management: namely, that it is sometimes untrue. Face it, some "dreams" just take too much money, brains, good looks, or talent to ever happen, and a dollop of reality would be welcome in tapes on this perennial topic. The book that accompanies this video is somewhat better done, with its kid-style illustrations and glossy pages, but it is still too simplistic to interest today's savvy children, and not specific enough for an adult to learn anything concrete. Not recommended. Aud: E, I, J, P. (K. Glaser)
