What is homeopathy? That question is explored in this program, the initial tape in a five-part series on homeopathy. Radley Metzger hosts this introduction to homeopathic medical treatment, which is more personalized than allopathic treatments which tend to follow a narrowly defined set of rules based on general symptoms. Historical narrative examines the life and work of Samuel Hahneman, the founder of homeopathic medicine, and traces the development of homeopathy in America (interestingly enough, homeopathy, developed in the late 1700s was part and parcel of the American medical landscape in the 1800s, and pre-dates the American Medical Association which expended much energy trying to eradicate the practice of homeopathy.) Interviews with practitioners such as Bill Gray and William Bergman, and converted personalities such as actress Lindsay Wagner, define the scope of homeopathic treatments, which are characterized by much smaller doses of medicine, and a tendency to work with--rather than dominate--the body's natural immune system. Other titles in the series include: Homeopathy & Cure, View From London, The Homeopathic Pharmacy/Laboratory, and Homeopathy in America. While these programs would be of interest to general audiences, the price tag puts them out of the reach of most public libraries. Recommended, with the above reservations.
