One of the best programs we've seen to date on the subject, Dying for a Smoke is a double-barreled attack on the tobacco industry, which combines testimony from medical experts such as former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop and commentary by a wide range of media personalities, including Charlton Heston, Chuck Norris, Gregory Hines, and Johnny Mathis. a very up-to-date report, the video looks at the escalating war between the tobacco magnates Philip Morris and RJR/Nabisco and the increasingly vocal lobbyists seeking to restrict the advertising of tobacco products (particularly ads aimed at children). With concern over the health hazards of both primary and secondary smoke growing, over 40 states have enacted regulatory laws about smoking in public places. Today, in the struggle to survive, tobacco P.R. people are screaming "censorship" and government repression, while staunchly denying that cigarette ads are targeted at kids (ironically, the cartoon character Joe Camel was, in a recent survey among children, listed as the second most recognizable cartoon figure after Mickey Mouse). This is a tough issue which is sparking many heated debates over the definition of a "drug," the choices between personal freedom and government mandates, and responsibility (or irresponsibility) in advertising. Sure to generate strong reactions on both sides of the battle lines, Dying for a Smoke is highly recommended. (R. Pitman)
