Winner of the 1999 Tony award for Best Musical, Fosse, starring Ben Vereen and Ann Reinking, serves up a song-and-dance tribute to the late choreographer and director whose fancy footwork was showcased in such huge Broadway hits as The Pajama Game (1954), Damn Yankees (1955), Sweet Charity (1966), Pippin (1972), Chicago (1975), and Dancin' (1978), as well as his films Cabaret (1972) and All That Jazz (1979). While musicals are hardly known for their involving plots, Fosse is absolutely plotless, comprised entirely of a series of numbers, arbitrarily divided into three acts, which are separated by interview clips with noted Fosse interpreters Vereen, Reinking, and Dana Moore. Still, these are some numbers--"Big Spender," "Steam Heat," "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries," "Mr. Bojangles," "I Wanna Be a Dancin' Man"--and they are performed here in the signature Fosse style--classical moves overlaid with sensual sliding, gliding and writhing. Rod Stewart notwithstanding, every picture does not tell a story, but Fosse, presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS sound, does succeed as a highlights reel of a master choreographer's body of work.
