An Oscar-winner for Best Documentary in 1952, this absorbing chronicle of author Thor Heyerdahl's incredible journey across the Pacific ocean on a raft made of nine pieces of balsa wood has held up amazingly well. Released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the expedition, which Heyerdahl and his crew undertook to show that it was possible for early Peruvian pre-Columbian peoples to sail to Polynesia, the film follows the Kon-Tiki members as they battle weather, sharks, and the odds, described in Heyerdahl's often humorous words. Recommended. (R. Pitman)
