Although popular imagination still believes the myth that Mary Magdalen was the bad girl of the Bible, a repentant prostitute who found mercy in Christ, this fascinating documentary reminds viewers that the "other Mary" has gotten a bum rap. Hosted by Penelope Ann Miller, the program points out that the Mary Magdalen of myth is actually a composite of 3 women, and that the Bible offers no evidence whatsoever that Mary Magdalen was a prostitute. What it does point out, quite clearly, is that Mary was an "apostle to the apostles," a pivotal figure who was present at the crucifixion, burial and resurrection of Jesus. In a time when women ranked lower than donkeys in terms of importance, Mary Magdalen was felt to be too uncomfortably strong a figure; hence the re-casting, to remind man of woman's sinful nature. An excellent exposé. Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (R. Pitman)
