Although director Michael Apted is best known for his feature films (Nell, Blink), he occasionally turns out a documentary (like 35 Up) that matches or surpasses his fictional efforts: like this extraordinary story of the May, 1989 student uprising in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. Combining historical footage, re-enactments, and contemporary interviews, Apted's film puts a human face on the shocking images that came across our TV screens. A beautiful, deeply involving story of the innate power of the human spirit. (R. Pitman)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
