Another well-intentioned, rushed-to-video memorial about the tragic events of September 11, 2001, this near half-hour tribute tries to walk the fine line between remembrance and sensationalism, but ultimately--in my opinion--emphatically crosses it…somewhere around the fifth or sixth repetition of footage showing United Airlines Flight 175 crashing into the south tower of the World Trade Center. Ostensibly offering a chronology of terror, the program combines maps, animated recreations and on-the-scene footage while adopting an adjective-heavy, present tense walkthrough of the attacks/crashes in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania. Statistically inaccurate (we are told that 4,950 lost their lives), occasionally grammatically wrong ("what was still unclear is if it was over"), and often visually repetitious, Remember September 11, 2001 is better than America 911: We Will Never Forget (VL-1/02), but still a far cry from the more measured assessments that are sure to be coming. Still, the sight here of one lone firefighter choking back tears as he says, "I wanted to just find one person," is a powerful reminder of the day's tragedy and sorrow--in some ways, more so than the repeated, mind-numbingly horrific scene of the second crash. Optional. Aud: H, C, P. (R. Pitman)
