Did you know that there is a patron saint of television? (Careful now, let's not commit a venial sin here). Well, believe it or not, in 1958, Pope Pius XII declared Clare, a 12th century Italian woman who was the founder and abbess of the Poor Clares (Clarissines), the patron saint of television. Here's the reason: too ill to attend a Christmas mass, Clare miraculously "saw" and heard everything from her sickbed. Although Pius XII could not have foreseen TV's less notable achievements (soaps, Jerry Springer, wrestling, cable porn), and it's questionable whether television really needs a patron saint, it's interesting to know that one exists. In addition to Clare, the third volume in the Saints For Kids series looks at John Bosco (patron of young people) and Andrew (the first apostle to follow Christ). Each of the roughly four-minute segments are simply animated with fairly straightforward narration pointing out what little is known about key events in each of the saints' lives. Whether kids will want to watch these rather bland capsule treatments (which make no attempt whatsoever to be even mildly entertaining) is another question; still, at $4.62 per saint, you've got to consider this a strong, optional purchase. Note: Vols. 1, 2, and 4 are also available. Aud: P. (R. Pitman)
