The author of over 100 books for children, Jean Craighead George's life is a testimony to wildlife conservation, environmental awareness, and human-animal interaction, and it's this ethos that distinguishes Storyteller from other videos that have featured juvenile or YA authors as their subjects. In addition to scenes of the author at home, reading from her works, answering fan mail, talking to schoolchildren about the writing process, and visiting her editor, we are treated to lovely videography of some of the locales featured in George's novels. A Newbery Medal winner for 1973's Julie of the Wolves and an artist, George is as tough a bird as the parrot that's her constant companion at home, often making precarious visits to the natural areas she writes about, including alligator-infested swamps! Despite a few missteps in terms of biographical detail (we don't learn when she was born, if she's married, or which "war" she's referencing when she says she worked for The Washington Post "during the war") and inconsistencies in subtitled graphics, this is a nicely-filmed introduction to one of juvenile literature's longest-lived contributors. A strong optional purchase. Aud: I, J, C, P. (K. Glaser)
