It probably goes without saying that the Supersuckers, a Seattle band whose songs include "Rock Your Ass," "I Want the Drugs," "Bad Bad Bad," and "Born With a Tail," don't exactly scale the heights of pop/rock sophistication. Fronted by singer/bassist Eddie Spaghetti (Edward Carlyle Daly III), with Rontrose Heathman and Dan "Thunder" Bolton on guitars, and Mike Murderburger on drums, the Supersuckers bring their semi-novelty country-punkabilly-speed metal act to Anaheim, CA for this 2004 concert featuring an hour-shy 18-song set (the DVD jacket lists 17 songs, but omits "Must've Been High," so from the tenth song--"Pretty Fucked Up"--on, the track numbers are incorrect). Intercut with the more raucous concert numbers are a handful of straightforward country songs played live at a more intimate venue, including "Dirt Roads, Dead Ends and Dust" (with the solid cry-in-your-low-carb-beer refrain, "I keep takin' dirt roads that turn into dead ends and dust"). I'm not exactly sure--in a Venn diagram sense--how big the audience slice is for fans who love AC/DC, the Ramones, and Willie Nelson equally, but that's who the Supersuckers are aiming at, and their music--while competent and occasionally even inductive to toe-tapping--feels like the "lite" version of all of the above. Presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, and bundled with a bonus 12-cut audio CD, the DVD also features a pair of bonus solo songs by Eddie Spaghetti, and an eight-minute featurette in which Spaghetti interviews the other band members on whether they would prefer to have the superpower of "flight" or "invisibility." Not a necessary purchase. Aud: P. (R. Pitman)
