Dutch artist Maurits Corneille Escher (1898-1972), renowned for his intricate symmetrical designs, is the subject of this 1980 documentary that often looks scratchy, features poorly edited interview clips (that tend to be both long and wandering), and lacks a strong focus. With no preface, viewers are introduced to Escher's Italian landscape pictures made during the early 1930s, and then his mosaic and geometrical designs inspired by Spanish art and architecture. The biographical elements are sketchy at best, the interviews with mathematicians such as Roger Penrose are rambling, and the computer-animated rearrangements of Escher's work seem pointless rather than instructive. Plus, many of Escher's more playful works, such as "The Librarian," aren't included. Not a necessary purchase. (R. Pitman)
